Julia Hollas Teaches Basic Ballet for Adults

There are some skills like learning a second language and learning to play an instrument that we assume can be picked up easier at a young age, dance, especially ballet, is another one of those skills many people assume is something we must learn when we are young. It is commonly thought that if you did not start practicing ballet when you were six then there is no point attempting it at age 20, 30 or even 50. Julia Hollas’ basic ballet class for adult contradicts this viewpoint.

The class, which started Jan. 23, is a relatively new addition to the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance’s open classes. Hollas is an alumna of the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and considers herself a freelance dance artist, meaning she works for various dance organizations, teaches and performs. Hollas, who has 19 years of ballet training, is currently dancing with Dandelion Dance Theatre and Alyce Finwall Dance Theater.

The class is intended for beginners, those with a little experience and those who have dance experience in different genres and would like to learn more about ballet. While having participated in some athletic activity would be beneficial there are no prerequisites for the class.  Hollas said that her motivation for starting to teach ballet to adults came from her desire to “investigate how dance can be relevant to people outside of the dance community.”

The class is taught on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, it costs $12 to drop in on a class.
